Full-Day Excursion to Sanchi, Bhojpur and Bhimbetka

This routing gives a fascinating journey through Buddhist heritage, ancient temple architecture and prehistoric India.

Departure from Bhopal

After an early breakfast, depart from your hotel in Bhopal by private vehicle.

The early start is important because it allows sufficient time at each major attraction without making the evening return excessively late.

09:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Sanchi – UNESCO World Heritage Site

Arrive at Sanchi, one of India's most important Buddhist archaeological sites.

Sanchi is renowned for its ancient Buddhist monuments, stupas, monasteries, temples and beautifully carved gateways. The site is particularly famous for the Great Stupa and its four ornate gateways.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism identifies Sanchi as an important archaeological destination in the region.

Recommended sightseeing time: 1½–2 hours
11:30 AM – 01:00 PM

Drive Towards Bhojpur

Depart Sanchi and proceed towards Bhojpur. Enjoy the countryside of Madhya Pradesh en route.

Bhojeshwar Mahadev Temple

Visit the magnificent Bhojeshwar Mahadev Temple , one of the most important medieval temple monuments near Bhopal.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is famous for its enormous Shiva Lingam and imposing unfinished architectural form.

Recommended time: 45–60 minutes

This is an excellent short stop between Sanchi and Bhimbetka.

Enjoy lunch at a suitable restaurant/resort en route towards Bhimbetka.

Drive to Bhimbetka

Proceed towards Bhimbetka Rock Shelters.

Bhimbetka Rock Shelters – Prehistoric India

This is the highlight of the excursion for history and archaeology enthusiasts.

Bhimbetka is famous for its prehistoric rock shelters and paintings depicting aspects of early human life.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism notes that Bhimbetka is in Raisen district and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.

Recommended sightseeing time: 1½–2 hours
Important

Wear comfortable walking shoes because visiting the rock shelters involves walking over uneven terrain.

Return Drive to Bhopal

Depart Bhimbetka for Bhopal.

Relax after a fascinating day covering some of Madhya Pradesh's most significant archaeological treasures.
